The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Iowa City shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday, warning of wind gusts up to 70 mph and penny-sized hail until 9:15 p.m.
Johnson County is also under a tornado watch and a high wind warning until late in the evening.

Sirens could be heard on the west side of Iowa City all the way into North Liberty as the expected storm moved into the area.
Strong winds and thunderstorms spread across the state Wednesday, with a high wind warning in effect beginning at 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
That prompted a host of downtown Iowa City businesses to announce that they intend to close early this evening.
The Iowa City Public Library has announced on its Twitter feed that it will close at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Solon Public Library will close at 5:30 p.m., according to its Facebook page.
Due to the anticipated strong winds and evening thunderstorms, Iowa City's Holiday Lights at the Lake at the West Overlook Campgroup will close Wednesday.
"In an abundance of caution and with the safety of our guests and volunteers in mind, Holiday Lights at the Lake in Iowa City at the West Overlook Campground will not be open this evening," the Holiday Lights at the Lake committee said in a news release Wednesday.
Holiday Lights at the Lake ask that guests visit its Facebook page for further information and updates related to weather cancelations.
